Daniel Anum Quartey produced a clinical display to beat top seed Benjamin Fumi 6-4,1-6,6-3 to win his second National Ranking title at the Accra Sports Stadium Tennis Court on Saturday. This year’s third National Ranking title was sponsored by five former Tennis Stars: Roger Crawford, Isaac Tetteh Quaye, Nii Dodoo, Isaac Nunoo and Victor Steiner.
Fumi took a 4-3 lead in the opening set but an energetic Quartey was quick to level the scores and won two straight games to clinch the set 6-4. In the second set, Fumi bounced back to break Quartey four times to win the second set 6-1. The final set was played out in similar fashion like the first set as Quartey outplayed his opponent with the score at 3-3 to win the remaining games and retain the National Ranking title for the first time in his career.
“I am very happy to have this trophy again. My body is very exhausted; I’m pretty surprised that the body just handled it somehow,” Quartey told Tennisgh.com after winning his 2nd national Ranking title. “Every title feels great and so I’m very proud of myself”.
“In the third set, I was really thinking that I can’t do it anymore. But then when you step [into] the shot again, you are just trying to hit the return, you play the rally, the serves, whatever.” Quartey added’. Quartey had for himself a trophy, an undisclosed amount and a Lacoste.
